Israel and Iran went to war, sparking massive tension in and around the Strait of Hormuz. Two tankers suffered a fiery collision south of the strait following extensive GPS spoofing. The US briefly joined the conflict before president Donald Trump claimed a ceasefire had been reached earlier this week.

Two titans of shipping passed away this month. One of the most famous names in French shipping, Philippe Louis-Dreyfus, was widely mourned following his death at the age of 80. The former head of Louis Dreyfus Armateurs held many other top positions at shipping associations around the world. Jim Lawrence, the American founder of Marine Money and MTI Network, succumbed to cancer at the age of 70. Lawrence was also the founder of the Connecticut Maritime Association’s annual conference.

Norwegian gas shipowner Solvang and BlackRock’s Global Infrastructure Partners (GIP) established a liquefied gas shipping joint venture. The 50:50 joint venture will be named Solvang Gas Carriers. It will initially own Solvang’s fleet of 13 VLGCs designed to transport LPG and ammonia, and will pursue growth across LPG, ammonia, ethane, and CO2 shipping.

UK shipowner Union Maritime launched a new lease financing programme, designed to help accelerate the adoption of wind-assisted propulsion systems in the maritime sector. The programme, named SeaBreeze, offers 100% financing, making sustainable technologies more accessible for shipowners aiming to meet evolving emissions targets.

Workers at sea reacted positively to the launch of a platform to allow crewmembers to anonymously rate and review living conditions onboard vessels with the site’s creator keen to get all shipping sectors involved. Despite its name, OffshoreShipAdvisor.com, the seafarer’s equivalent of Tripadvisor, now covers all shipping sectors, not just offshore, with more than 37,000 vessels in its database. Seafarers are invited to rate ships on this new site, looking at categories including accommodation, downtime facilities, food and drink, wifi, and cleanliness.
