The UK has followed the lead of the US in sanctioning five LNG carriers linked to Russian gas exports.

Earlier this year, the UK alongside the US and the European Union, imposed sanctions on Russia’s flagship Arctic LNG 2 terminal, as a result of which the project was forced to slash production.

“Today’s action builds on this by targeting ships and entities involved in the Russian LNG sector, which engage with projects important to Russia’s future energy production,” the government in London said in a statement.

Talks of Russia potentially amassing a shadow fleet of LNG carriers started earlier this year when industry experts warned Moscow could implement a similar scenario to what it did with oil and product tankers to circumvent sanctions.
